Die eBikes, die wir selbst fahren

Every other page here is measurement — specs, prices, stock checks, all dated and sourced. This one is opinion: the bikes we rate most, why, and the one purchase we would make differently. Where we own the bike ourselves it says so on the card, because “we ride this one” and “we rate this one” are not the same claim.

The annoyances are on this page too. The numbers below are read live from the catalogue, so they always match the bike pages.

This has quietly become the daily bike, and the reason is the suspension. It is the most comfortable thing we own by a distance — the kind of comfort that decides which bike you actually reach for, even though it is the slowest of the four. On paper it is also the strongest: a mid-drive motor with the most torque on this page, driving through the gears rather than the hub, which is why it climbs better than anything else here.

Der Haken It is the heaviest bike on this page at 33 kg, which you feel lifting it into a car or up a step, and a mid-drive puts more wear through the chain and cassette than a hub motor does — budget for that upkeep. Still the bike that gets ridden most: comfort wins.

This was the bike that got bought after a long shortlist, and the reason is weight: at well under 20 kg it is the only one here you can carry up a flight of stairs without resenting it. The torque sensor and the automatic gearbox mean you push the pedals and it simply goes — no lag, no hunting for the right gear at a junction.

Der Haken Two things. The battery is the smallest here, so it is a commuter rather than a tourer. And it is rigid: ours caught a pothole hard enough to knock the front brake out of alignment, and the wheel has squeaked once per revolution since. That is a British road rather than a design fault, and it is a workshop job rather than a serious one — but it is exactly the hit the suspension bike above shrugs off, and it is why that one now gets ridden more.

  3. The one we rave about

    Cyrusher Kommoda Pro

    Motor

    Sensor

    No — locked

The sensor setup is the thing. Most eBikes give you a cadence sensor (power arrives when the pedals turn) or a torque sensor (power scales with how hard you push). This runs both and lets you choose, and it is genuinely hard to go back from — it reads what you are asking for instead of guessing. It is also the newest bike on this page and carries the biggest battery of the four.

Der Haken It is heavy — more than twice the ADO. Wonderful to ride, no fun at all to lift onto a rack or carry through a hallway.

  4. The sensible-value pick

    Engwe L20 3.0 Boost

The cheapest bike on this page and the one we would point a first-time buyer at. Engwe build quality has been consistently good across everything we have had from them — nothing has rattled loose, nothing has needed sending back, and the lock is our only complaint about the brand, not the bikes. This one is derestrictable, which is the difference that matters.

A word on the speed limiter

A UK electric bike is legally an EAPC: the motor must stop assisting at 15.5 mph, and you can ride it anywhere a normal bicycle is allowed. Some bikes let you raise that limit and some are locked shut — which is the difference we flag as derestrictable above.

Raising the limit takes the bike outside EAPC rules. It then counts as a motor vehicle in the UK, needing registration, tax, insurance and a helmet, and it is no longer allowed on cycle paths — and your insurer will take the same view after an accident. We record the setting because it decides what a bike can legally be, not to suggest you change it. Die vollständigen Regeln finden Sie hier.
